Reflecting on two decades at the National Library of Indonesia — where tradition meets AI, and knowledge becomes a bridge to the future.
When I started my career in 2006, libraries were still largely focused on managing physical collections. Our daily operations involved cataloging, classification, and ensuring patrons had access to the right resources. At the National Library of Indonesia, this meant maintaining extensive collections of physical books, journals, and archives — a time when librarianship was defined by our ability to curate and preserve knowledge for future generations.
During this period, the internet was just beginning to shape information retrieval. I remember indexing and cataloging large volumes manually, using early automated systems. It was a rewarding era, laying the groundwork for the library’s future modernization. The craft of cataloging taught me the profound value of structured knowledge — a skill that later became essential in data science.
By my 10-year mark in 2016, the National Library of Indonesia had begun transitioning to digital platforms. Online catalogs, digital archives, and e-books became key focus areas. The librarian’s role expanded — I found myself leading initiatives to digitize vast archives, making them accessible to a global audience. Remote and underserved areas gained unprecedented access.
During this phase, data-driven insights began reshaping procurement and collection development. I realized that libraries were becoming knowledge hubs — not only about preserving but also about connecting people to insights through analytics.
Around the time I transitioned into a data scientist role in 2021, through my PhD Program in Data Science, the call for libraries to embrace artificial intelligence became urgent. I began leveraging AI to improve library operations — from predictive analytics for collection management to using natural language processing (NLP) that enhanced search functions. The shift was driven by a desire to make libraries more user-centered and efficient.
By analyzing borrowing trends, we anticipate high-demand materials and adjust procurement strategies — ensuring resources reach patrons just in time.
Natural language processing helps users find resources faster, understanding queries beyond keyword matching. AI-driven indexing handles digital volumes at scale.
Machine learning algorithms recommend materials based on past usage patterns, creating a unique and engaging journey for every patron.
From automated reference services to 24/7 library chatbots, AI extends our reach and makes information accessible beyond physical walls.
With AI, we now offer dynamic user services that empower communities. The combination of data science and traditional library values has proven to be a catalyst for innovation.
Libraries are no longer confined to physical spaces. AI and machine learning augment our capabilities, they don't replace the human mission.
Data science reveals user behavior patterns, allowing hyper-personalized services — from tailored recommendations to inclusive community programs.
Not every librarian needs to be a data scientist, but foundational skills in data analysis and ethical AI are vital for shaping modern libraries.
Working with data scientists, tech experts, and educators helps design innovative systems that bridge the gap between tradition and transformation.
Despite AI, libraries are about people. The human touch — helping a patron find the right book, building welcoming spaces — remains irreplaceable.
My 20 years of service at the National Library of Indonesia have been shaped by continuous evolution — from traditional cataloging to integrating AI and data science into the heart of library services. The journey has been transformative, but the core mission has remained unwavering: serving the public and providing access to knowledge for all.
As I look toward the future, I’m excited to continue contributing to this evolution. For young librarians entering this field, the key is adaptability, lifelong learning, and a commitment to using technology to enhance the library’s essential role in society. The digital era is not a challenge but an invitation to reimagine how we connect people with information.
"Libraries are no longer just about books — they are dynamic platforms where tradition meets artificial intelligence, and every data point helps us serve communities with empathy. The transformation I witnessed proves that the soul of librarianship grows stronger when paired with innovation."
